The Strange Comfort of Indian Night Trains
The Strange Comfort of Indian Night Trains
Airplanes are efficient, but trains have soul. There is a very specific, liminal aesthetic to taking a long-distance night train across India. There is something profoundly comforting about boarding a sleeper class train at 10 PM, finding your berth, and knowing that for the next 12 hours, you are completely disconnected from your responsibilities.
The Story: The 2 AM Chai Call
"The train stopped in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by fog. And then I heard it."
I was on the Rajdhani Express going from Delhi to Mumbai. I couldn't sleep. The rhythmic swaying of the carriage was mesmerizing, but my brain was wide awake. Around 2 AM, the train slowed to a halt at a small, poorly lit station enveloped in thick winter fog.
Suddenly, the silence was broken by the melodic, haunting chant echoing down the platform: 'Chai, chai, garam chai.' I leaned out the barred window into the freezing air and bought a tiny paper cup of excessively sweet, ginger-heavy tea. Sitting there, sipping scalding tea while the rest of the train slept, I felt an incredible sense of peace. It remains one of my favorite travel memories.
Rule 1: Top Berth is Elite
Always book the Upper Berth (UB). The lower berth means you have to share your space with everyone during the day. The upper berth is your private sanctuary. You can climb up there, put on your headphones, and read a book without anyone asking you to 'adjust'.
The Story: Strangers in the AC 2-Tier
On a 36-hour journey to Kerala, I shared a coupe with an elderly couple and a young army officer. At first, everyone was buried in their phones or books. But around dinner time, the elderly woman pulled out a massive tiffin carrier filled with homemade parathas, sabzi, and pickle.
She absolutely refused to let any of us eat the pantry food and forced us to share her meal. That broke the ice. For the next five hours, we played cards, swapped ghost stories, and debated politics. When we finally arrived at Ernakulam, we exchanged numbers. Indian trains force you into community, and it's beautiful.
Rule 2: The Curated Train Playlist
The rhythmic clack-clack of the tracks acts like a natural lullaby. Prepare an offline playlist of slow, ambient tracks. Watch the silhouettes of unknown towns and forests blur past the window. It's the perfect time to write in your journal and just exist without pressure.
