Why Traveling India During the Monsoon is Actually Elite

Everyone tells you to avoid the rainy season. They tell you it's muddy, humid, and unpredictable. They are completely wrong. The Western Ghats turn into a literal paradise, the crowds disappear, and the entire landscape takes on a moody, cinematic aesthetic that you can't find anywhere else.

The Story: The Coorg Coffee Estate

"It wasn't just raining; the sky was emptying itself over the forest."

I booked a cheap homestay in a coffee plantation in Coorg during the peak of July monsoon. When I arrived, the rain was torrential. I couldn't go trekking. I couldn't visit the tourist spots. I was effectively trapped on the porch of the wooden cabin.

It ended up being the best three days of my year. I sat in an armchair, watching the mist roll through the dense neon-green coffee bushes. The host brought me endless cups of strong filter coffee and hot pakoras. The sound of the rain hitting the tin roof was deafening but incredibly soothing. It forced me to stop rushing and just exist in the moment.

Rule 1: The Western Ghats Come Alive

Places like Mahabaleshwar, Coorg, and Wayanad are entirely transformed by the monsoon. Hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascade down the mountainsides. The mist rolls so thick you can't see 10 feet in front of you. It's eerie, romantic, and breathtaking. Leave the Himalayas for the summer; the Ghats are for the monsoon.

The Story: The Empty Viewpoints

Normally, getting a photo at Arthur's Seat in Mahabaleshwar involves fighting through crowds of families and dodging selfie sticks. I went in August during a heavy drizzle. The place was completely deserted. I had the entire panoramic view of the valley to myself. The fog would clear for ten seconds, revealing the lush green gorge below, and then swallow it up again. It felt like a private screening of nature.

Rule 2: Off-Season Perks are Unmatched

Because it's the off-season, everything is incredibly cheap. You can book luxury homestays for the price of a hostel. The popular viewpoints are completely empty. Pack a good raincoat, waterproof your electronics, and embrace the mud. The monsoon is the ultimate aesthetic travel experience.
